Dhaulagiri - buddhist stupaBhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, is also known as the Temple City of India .It is said that at one point of time in Bhubaneswar there were more than 2000 temples. Even in the present times, we can find on an average, at least two temples, dating back to the BC era, in every lane of old Bhubaneswar. Centuries-old Holy tanks and huge wells can be found in old Bhubaneswar (Old Town as it is popularly known).

Although known for its Hindu temples, Bhubaneswar is also quite popular for the Buddhist tourist attractions. Main tourist attractions being the Dhauligiri, Lalitgiri Ratnagiri and Udaygiri, all at a radius of 10km from each other, situated at a distance of 60kms from Bhubaneswar.

The Dhauligiri with its rock edict installed somewhere during the 3rd century BC bears the testimony to the transformation that took place in emporer Ashoka of the Mauryan dynasty after the unfortunate Kalinga war on the banks of the Daya river. Written in Palli the edict here inscribes many of Asoka’s preaching after he embraced Buddhism. There is a Buddhist structure known as the Peace Pagoda built in 1972 by the joint efforts of the Buddhist sangha of Kalinga and Japan.

Situated in the Birupa river valley in the Jajpur district of Odisha near Bhubaneswar Ratnagiri is another famous Buddhist centre. Excavations reveal a large Buddhist monastery with many relics, a university dating back to the 8th-9th century AD about which mention has been made in the Tibetan Scriptures.

There is another tourist destination situated a few km away from Ratnagiri known as Lalitgiri .Lalitgiri is also another important Buddhist tourist attraction. Significant archaeological materials like the ruins of a huge brick monastery, number of stupas, huge Buddha Statues and many more artefacts housed in the museum is an interesting tourist destination for the visitors.

About 5kms from Ratnagiri, is a huge site of excavation. At this site, also remains of a huge brick monastery with lots of Buddhist sculpture, statues and figurines, and inscriptions on tablets have been unearthed. This site has been drawing a large number of visitors not only historians and archaeologists’ but Buddhist and common man as well.
