The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was opened in 1881. It is now a UNESCO world Heritage site. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, popularly known as the Toy Train operates several routes between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling, Darjeeling and Ghoom, between Siliguir and Agony point and another route between Kurseong and Darjeeling. The toy train ride is a popular tourist attraction as it passes through some spectacular and picturesque mountain scenery with exiting loops and zigzag tracks and even through the main roads of some villages.

Batashiya Loop

Batashiya loop is famous because this is the place where the ‘Toy train’ makes a loop. There is a beautiful landscaped garden at the Batashiya Loop. One can buy local handicrafts from the market, especially in the morning. There is the Gorkha Martya Memorial here.

Nightingale Park/ Shrubbery Park

Situated 2.5 km from Darjeeling Railway station, the Nightingale Park is a good alternative to the Tiger Hill as the sunlight magic on Kanchenjunga can also be seen from this part. The best time to visit the park is in the evening when live entertainment programmes are also organized. This park is a good spot for photographers.

Bhutia Basti Gompa

This Buddhist monastery was originally located on the Observatory Hill before it was sacked by the Nepalese in the 19th century. Rebuilt on the present site, the ill fated monastery was again destroyed by the 1934 earthquake. Later the Late Chogyal of Sikkim took up the construction of the present structure. Belonging to the Red sect of Buddhist Hamas, the Monastery was originally called ‘Dorjee ling’ and hence Darjeeling owes its name to the monastery.

Ghoom Monastery

At an elevation of 8000 ft. and at a distance of 8 Km. from Darjeeling, there is the Yiga-choling monastery popularly known as Ghoom Monastery. This monastery belongs to the Yellow sect of Buddhists. A 15 ft. statue of ‘Coming Buddha’ is worshipped here. Built in 1875, this monastery is the largest of the three Monasteries found in and around Darjeeling. Some valuable Tibetan texts and paintings are housed here.

Japanese Peace Pagoda

There are six Japanese peace pagodas known as Shanti Stupas in India. These stupas were established by the Fuzi Guru, a close friend of Mahatma Gandhi, for World peace. One such stupa, known as Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist Temple is there in Darjeeling which is popularly known as Japanese Peace Pagoda.

Senchal Lake

Located around 10Km from Darjeeling is the Senchal Lake near the Tiger Hill. The seeming beauty of the area around the Senchal Lake amidst wild greenery surrounded by snow covered mountains is breath taking. There is also a golf course nearby.
