Although primarily known for its beaches, Diu also offers a host of other tourist attractions including some popular forts and must-visit temples. Here is a list of some of the top tourist attractions of Diu.

Popular Tourist Attractions in Diu

Diu Fort

Constructed between 1535-1541 the fort is situated right along the shoreline. It stands as a testimony of the strategic alliance between the Sultan of Gujarat and the Portuguese when Diu was attacked by the Mughal Emperor Humayun. Surrounded by sea on three sides, the Diu Fort is a huge imposing structure commanding a magnificent view of the sea. A masterpiece in rock masonry, the Diu Fort houses a Light House on its top. The bastions with canoes, the place to hang bells, the huge windows with stone galleries transports a visitor to the bygone era of gallant soldiers and princess in distress. Today it houses the Diu Jail.

Panikotha (Fortim-do-mar)

Approximately one nautical mile from Diu Jetty, the fortress of Panikotha is a magnificent stone structure built right at the mouth of the creek in the sea. Shaped like a ship legend has it that Fortim Do Mar was once connected with land by an under sea tunnel. The Panikotha Fort can be reached by a motor launch since it is a few kilometers away from the main shore. The Fortress has a chapel of our Lady of the Sea and a light house also. Gangeswar Temple

Located around 3kms. away from Diu, in Fudam village, the Gangeswar temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The unique feature of this temple is that it is situated amidst rocks on the seashore that are washed by the waves of the sea. The five Shivlings in this temple is believed to have been installed by the five Pandavas of Mahabharata during their exile. The rocky environs, the gentle sea offering her obeisance and the serene ambience lends a mystic aura around the cave temple of Gangeswar where one can feel a lot of positivity in the air.

Nagoa Beach

The famous Nagoa Beach is a semicircle beach shaped like a ‘horse shoe’. Located in Nagoa village, it takes a 20 minutes drive from Diu, through cool dense coconut groves and long expanse of open arid land, to reach the golden sands and foamy waves of the Nagoa Beach. This secluded exceptionally beautiful and quiet beach is a haven for water sports like swimming, gamboling, parasailing and wind, surfing. The whispering and swaying Hoka trees, the intoxicating sea breeze, the serene beauty of the surroundings gives the visitors unforgettable peace and pleasure.

St. Thomas Church Museum

A huge edifice in Gothic architecture, the St. Thomas church was built in 1598. A part of this ancient relic of the colonial empire is presently converted into a Museum. Well known as Diu Museum, the church now acts as a repository of valuable archeological findings. A popular tourist attraction, the Diu Museum houses numerous stone inscriptions of ancient rulers, antique statues, multicolored fountains, wood carvings and idols. A special lighting outside the building makes it look very attractive.

Other Tourist Attractions

Zampa Gateway- Zampa Gateway is a prominent landmark located near Padmabhusan Sports complex. Constructed during the medieval period, the gateway features carvings of angels, lions and a priest. There is a chapel dating back to the year 1702 and the artificial but attractive Zampa Waterfall.
INS Khukri Memorial Built in memory of the officers and sailors who chose to go down with the warship INS Khukri when it was hit by a Pakistani Warship during the Indo-Pak war 1971. A visit to this memorial leaves a sobering and humbling feeling in the visitors’ mind.
