1. Red Fort

Popularly known as Lal Quila, the Red Fort, built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1638, is a representative of the true splendour and grandiose of the Mughal era. Located in Old Delhi, on the banks of the River Yamuna, the Lal Quila, opposite to, Chandini Chowk, took 10 years to be completed and was the capital of the Mughals from the day it was occupied by the Emperor Shah Jahan till 1857 when the last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Jaffar was deposed to Burma by the British. Within the huge fort complex there are beautiful palaces, meeting halls, mosques, mansions, mausoleums, gardens and bazaars. A complete imperial township thrived inside the fort. Each structure in the fort is embellished with exquisite and intricate work inlaid with marble, semiprecious stones, ivory, silver and gold. The artistry of the fort is a synthesis of Persian, Indian and European art, known as the Shahjahani art style. Almost all rulers who occupied the palace went on to add one or two structures leaving his own stamp in the architectural style. Even the last Mughal occupant Bahadur Shah Zafar had a garden, Hayat Baksh Bagh, built in 1842. After 1857, the fort was taken over by the British and remained with them till independence. The Red fort has been plundered and looted by several invaders over the centuries, yet it has retained its majestic grandeur in its bare walls.

A walk through the Fort will force the visitor exclaim WOW ! Today, the main gate of the fort, the Lahore Gate attracts a huge crowd on August 15th every year as it is here that the Prime minister unfurls the tri-colour.
