Sri Aurobindo Ashram

The Ashram and Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy has attracted followers from all over the world. The Ashram complex houses a school, hospital and dispensary. More about Sri Aurobindo Ashram.


The promenade is a 1.5 Km long walking stretch built along the sea-front. Running along the beach the promenade is where one can see the rich architectural culture of Pondicherry. The sea front is graced with the statue of Mahatma Gandhi set against eight exquisitely carved pillars, the elegant war memorial raised by the French in memory of those who laid their lives in WWI, the heritage building ‘Marie’, Jeanne d’ Arc, Dupleise, the 27m tall light house and a few more. An evening stroll with the pleasant breeze from the Bay of Bengal will give a glimpse of the social milieu of Pondicherry.

Pondicherry Museum

The Pondicherry Museum houses important artifacts dating to the 1st century B.C. These relics speak about the connection of Pondicherry with the Romans during the Greco-Roman era. This Museum has a rich collection of sculptures. The Pondicherry Museum also showcases the French colonial past through many paintings and memorabilia. The Pondicherry Museum is a must-see tourist attraction.

Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple

Dedicated to Lord Ganesh, the Manakula Vinayagar Temple is located just behind the Raj Niwas A holy place for the Hindus, the sculptured walls and paintings of the temple are just too beautiful for words. The most interesting fact is the temple elephant at the main entrance greeting the visitors with a head pat with his trunk.

Botanical Garden

Created in 1826, the Botanical Garden was once known as ‘Colonial Park’. The Botanical Garden has a good collection of varied variety of species of flora apart from fountains, an aquarium and a toy train for children.


Basically conceived as a ‘universal town’ by Sri Maa, this amazing city of community living is still in the process of development. Started in 1968, the main feature of Aurovilla is that people with different nationalities, beliefs, language, religion and culture live in harmony. A major tourist attraction is the MatriMandir a 30 meter high crystal globe.

Romain Rolland Library

Established in 1872, the Romain Rolland Library is one of the oldest libraries in the country. Originally known as Bibliotheque Publique, the name was changed to Romain Rolland, in honour of the French scholar close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. Systematically arranged in various sections the Lirary has a huge collection of more than 350,000 books. The library remains open from Tuesday to Sunday from 7.30am to 4.30pm except Monday.
The Library also has a mobile section catering to the needs of the rural population.


Just 4 kms from Pondy city, Arikamedu is a huge excavation site .This region reveals evidences of Roman settlement nearly 2000 years ago.Arikamedu is a popular tourist attraction frequented by historians and research scholars.
