Pune Tourist Attractions - Pratapgadh - Mahabaleswar and more

Published: 11/06/2012

Pratapgadh is the place where the famous encounter between king Shivaji Raje Bhonsle the ruler of Ahmednagar and Afzal Khan had taken place. Despite being attacked by tiger claws by Afzal Khan, Shivaji killed Afzal Khan here in this fort. There is a temple of Bhavani Mata where Shivaji offered his prayers. The tomb of Afzal Khan is also there. Presently Pratapgadh doubles up as a hill station as well.

Lohagadh and Visapur Forts

Once considered as strongholds of Chatrapati Shivaji, the twin forts of Lohagadh and Visapur (only a km. apart) lie in ruins. One has to trek from Malavli to reach the forts. Encounters with mischievous monkeys and a waterfall enroute can make the otherwise tedious journey enjoyable.

Mahabaleswar was founded in 1828 by Maharaja Pratapsinha of Satara. It was basically meant to be a health resort. Later, the British converted it into the summer capital of Bombay Presidency. Mahabaleswar is a typical colonial town with golf courses, boating facilities, fishing sports and trekking trails, colonial buildings and also a cemetery. There are several look out points (Sunset point, Wilsonís point, Loverís Point, Arthurís Seat, Bombay point and many more) that give a spectacular view of the plains and the sea, the forests and the plateaus, the Orchards (Strawberry, Chikku, Raspberry etc and the famous lake Venna. Mahabeleswar remains an all time favourite tourist attraction. The best time to visit the hill station is from October to June.

Lonavla and Khandala

Lonavla and Khandala are twin hill stations situated 70 Km from Pune. It is just an hour and a half long drive from Pune, this is a perfect weekend getaway to destress. Close to the hill stations lies a hamlet called Rajmachi where the twin forts of Monoranjan and Srivardhan is a tourist attraction. Ray Wood Park, Tungarli and Bushy Dams and Lonavla lake are some of the places to visit. In recent years there has been a heavy influx of tourists thanks to Bollywood for popularizing it in the movie songs and names.

More popular for the best variety of boarding schools where the whoís who of the Film industry have studied, Panchgani is a hill station with picturesque locales and breath taking view points and lookout spots Located 100Km. from Pune, Panchgani lies on five hills, as the name suggests. It has a more laid back, quiet and dreamy spirit than the highly commercialized Mahabeleswar which is on 20Km. away from Panchgani.
