3. Qutub Minar

Built to commemorate the victory of Mohammad Ghori over the great Hindu Rajput king of Delhi Prithviraj Chauhan, the Qutub Minar was built in 1192AD by Qutub Ud din Aibak. It is the tallest structure in India 72.5m in height, and took 20 years to complete. A red sandstone tower embellished with beautiful inscription from the holy Quran, the Qutub Minar originally had four storey with four projecting balconies. After the damage of the upper most storey by lightening in 1326, the then ruler of Delhi Feroz Tughlaq replaced it and added another storey to the Minar. The Quwwat Ui Islam Mosque and the Iron Pillar dating back to the 4th century AD are two other attractions in the Qutub complex. To many the Qutub Minar signifies the end of the Hindu rule in northern India. . The Qutub Minar stands tall and stout, being a witness to a diary of events in and around Delhi for over a millennium now and will remain to do so for several millennia to come. A major landmark and a popular tourist attraction, the Qutub Minar complex with the Iron Pillar, Quwwat-Ul-Mosque, Alai Darwaza and many other structures, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Situated in Mehrauli, South Delhi, one can visit the Minar any time any day between 6am to 6pm.
