2. The Tomb of Humayun

Declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site, Humayun’s Tomb is the Tomb of the second Mughal Emperor Humayun. It was built by Humayun’s wife Hamida Banu Begum, designed by a Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyath. Built in red sand stone, the complex houses the main tomb of Emperor Humayun, his wife and many subsequent mughal emperors, princes and members of royal household. Around the tomb there is a sprawling garden in the Persian charbagh style. The tomb in Persian architectural style has a pure white marble dome as against the rest of the structure in red sand stone. During the heydays of the Mughals, this tomb was decorated with rich interior furnishing with rich carpets, the walls were studded with semiprecious stones, inlaid tile work carving with both Indian and Persian elements and carved stone screens with jali work. In many ways Humayun’s Tomb became the model and for runner of most of the Mughal monuments of the later emperors. One can visit the site any time between sunrise to sunset. A must visit destination for students of architecture, history and lovers of beauty and romance .
