Udaipur - City of Lakes

City Palace, Udaipur
Udaipur is one of the most romantic and beautiful cities of India. Set in the Aravalli Mountain Ranges, and on the banks of the Pichola lake it is also known as the 'City of Lakes'. It was the historic capital of the erstwhile Kingdom of Mewar and is also known as the 'Jewel of Mewar'. A lake city with three interconnected lakes, the Pichola Lake, Swaroop Sagar Lake and Fateh Sagar Lake, with exquisite marble palaces, with spectacular view of the sun setting behind the mountain ranges, with a long history, rich heritage and colourful culture, with brave and heroic kings, Udaipur has become the most sought after tourist destination. Many palaces which have been converted into heritage hotels, attract celebrities including film stars, business families, politicians and foreign tourists to Udaipur. It has become a favourite marriage destination, for the rich and the famous, of late.

History of Udaipur

Founded by Maharana Udai Singh-II on the advice of a sage he had met while hunting in the foothills of the Aravalli Range, the city of Udaipur reminds us of heroism. The sage blessed the king and asked him to build a palace on the very spot, (banks of the Pichola Lake) as the place was well protected by the natural surrounding of the Aravalli Hills. After the Mughals captured Chittor (the then capital of Mewar) the king moved to Udaipur and made it the new capital in 1557 AD. With the decline of the Mughal empire the Ranas and Maharanas reinstated their power by recapturing most of Mewar except Chittor. Udaipur remained the capital safe from the Mughals and their influence because of its location in the mountain region and was unsuitable for Mughal solidiers. Udaipur remained the capital of Mewar even after the British took over and made it a princely state in 1818.
