17th January 2011
One of the last remaining truely tribal belt of India, Orissa's remotest regions offer a great opportunity to explore the lifestlye of these tattooed, heavily beaded, nearly naked tribal people, their day to day activity and their extremely primitive way of living. During a typical tribal tour of Orissa, you will get a chance to meet some of these most rural and primitive people, have a glimpse of one of their tribal festivals, attend a weekly tribal market where people from remote villages and mountains meet to exchange food, clothes and other goods.
Orissa tribal tours usually range from 4 to up to 15 days depending on the extent to which you want to explore the culture. Most tribal tours of Orissa start from Bhubaneswar which is reachable by flight from New Delhi, Mumbai or other major cities. Connecting trains are available from all over India. The tour could start with a one or two day trip of Bhubaneswar, the "Temple City of India" with its large number of Hindu temples (over 600 temples), which span the entire spectrum of Kalinga architecture. The Lingaraj temple is the largest of all the temples and is over 1000 years old. (For accommodation, see hotels in Bhubaneswar)
The tour could then continue to Baliguda, Rayagada, Jeypore, Chilika Lake, Narasinghapur, Puri, Konark and then back to Bhubaneswar. The tours could include day trips from Baliguda to Barakhamba to visit the tattooe faced desia Kondha Tribes. Another day trip from Baliguda to Belghar area will show you around the Kuttiya Kondha tribal village as well as their weekly market. Similar day trips from Jeypore to Ankadeli/Lamptaput will let you visit the fierce Bonda tribes - mostly naked people. Also visit Gupteswar where you will see the Dhuba tribes as well as the Gupteswar cave temple where the tribes have been praying since ages.
