Mumbai is the most expensive city in India and so are the hotels in Mumbai. High demand for hotel rooms in Mumbai combined with the high affordability among domestic and international travellers to Mumbai makes Mumbai hotels less affordable for average Indian tourists and business travellers. However, these are still good-value hotels in Mumbai. Here are three simple tips that will save you time, money and frustration during your next trip to Mumbai.
Tip #1. Lower your expectations - I have been to many places in India and to several countries outside India. I have visited Mumbai many many times and I have stayed in different types of hotels all throughout Mumbai. I still get frustrated every now and then when it comes to finding a good hotel Mumbai. I have figured that Mumbai is very different from any other city. Things here are just expensive and the only way to enjoy my stay in Mumbai is to lower my expecations from the money I spend here. A Rs. 2000 room in another city can go a long way. However a 3-star hotel in Mumbai near Marine Drive could easily cost in upwards of Rs. 6000 and more. If I lower my expectation from these hotels, I usually find my stay in Mumbai more pleasant. My expectation is a nice and clean room, hot shower and clean towels, and a decent location. I try to get just that and I am happy.
Tip #2. Read customer reviews of hotels in Mumbai - This is a relatively easily task. Look for these three important things while reading reviews. (a) Recency - look for the most recent reviews, i.e. reviews from the last 6 months. (b) Recommendation Percent - find out how many people say they will recommend this hotel, i.e. they will visit this hotel again or would refer the Mumbai hotels to friends (see the image on the right that says 85% recommendation for this hotel. (c) Over rating - This gives you an idea of the overall value-for-your-money of the hotel you are reviewing. 3 or more stars is usually a good enough rating for hotels in Mumbai (image on your right shows 4.5 star customer rating for this hotel). Following these three easy instructions while reading reviews of Mumbai hotels will help you find a great value hotel and will save you much pain.
Tip #3. Location! Location! Location! - In Mumbai, you pay for the location. Hotels near the Mumbai International Airport tend to be more expensive but are convenient for those who have a connecting flight to catch. Same with hotels in Juhu and southern Mumbai. Whereas similar hotels in northern and east Mumbai (Navi Mumbai or Goregaon) tend to be less expensive. See the map above to get a quick overview of various important areas in Mumbai.
Value hotels in Mumbai - Here are a few nice hotel options for mumbai that are either conveniently located and are a good value for your money. Hotel Airlines International (Rs. 3000) a boutique hotel located at Santa Cruz (E) near both the Domestic (3km) and International Airport in Mumbai (8km) and only 5 min from the city railway station.
